Well known philanthropist Charles Bronfman has established The Andrea M. Bronfman Prize for the Arts (“The Andy”) to honor his wife’s lifelong passion for and support of the arts, and to create a showcase for Israeli decorative artists. With the award, Andrea and Charles Bronfman continue their support of artists in Israel as an extension of a broader philanthropic mission.
The prize will be given annually to an Israeli decorative artist for excellence in the fields of ceramics, jewelry, textile or glass. Each Andy recipient will receive $50,000 NIS, as well as the proceeds from the purchase of one work, which will be gifted to the collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. In addition, an exhibit of the artist’s works will be held in Tel Aviv’s Eretz Israel Museum and a catalogue of the exhibit will be published. Only artists who have developed a considerable body of work will be considered.
The Andy is another facet of a global strategy to strengthen connections between Jews living in the Diaspora communities and in Israel.
Says Charles Bronfman: “The Andy is about excellence. By recognizing excellence, we can instill in Israel’s decorative artists the knowledge that their craftsmanship is on par with the best in the world – and for the international arts community to recognize that as well. The connection starts at that level, and grows.”
